Kids Caught in the Middle
How Families are Harmed When Judges Don’t Follow the Law
Why did I write this book?
The law is designed to protect children and families. When judges do not follow the law, it demonstrates a lack of care – not only to the families who are impacted by the decision, but also to the people of Michigan who elect legislators to enact the laws that protect our children and families. I hope you – as a family law attorney, as a parent, and perhaps even as a judge – care to know how bad decisions are made and how they affect our families and our children.

Taking the next step.
-
Judges and Justices.
Judges at all levels of our judicial system, you play such an important role in the future of our families and children. Every case you decide has the potential to effect broader change – for better or for worse. Trial court decisions can be appealed and ultimately result in appellate decisions that other judges and family law attorneys will rely on. Remember, attorneys and judges will regularly look to unpublished decisions. And, of course, published decisions are binding on the courts.

Family Law Attorneys.
I wrote the book for family law attorneys, to help you better represent your clients in court, to give you the courage to challenge judges who don’t follow the law. But there is a lot more family law attorneys can do to effect change, both inside and outside of the courtroom.

-
Legislators.
As a State Senator or Representative in the House, you hold a critical role in crafting legislation to help Michigan children and families. Knowing that only a handful of legislators are attorneys, and knowing that you face term limits, it is even more important for you to get up to speed quickly on family law issues.

The Governor
If you are the Governor (Hello Gretchen Whitmer!) or on the Governor’s staff, you play a unique role (there is only one of you!) in effectuating change in the family law system.

Parents and Concerned Citizens.
Parents who come before the family law courts often feel powerless and lost in the system. But there is action you can take, along with other people in this State who are troubled by the problems discussed in Kids Caught in the Middle.

Liisa’s book is an indispensable resource for parents, attorneys, and judges finding themselves caught up in (often complex and hotly contested) custody and parenting time cases.
As an attorney whose practice is predominantly post-divorce custody and parenting time cases, Liisa’s book is almost a look into “a day in the life of.” So often do parents have time with their children shortened or, worse suspended entirely, on inflammatory motions – oftentimes on an ex parte basis where the targeted parent has no meaningful opportunity to present his or her side of the story. These motions can be brought months, or even years, after a divorce judgment or other order has been finalized (frequently without a trial or significant court-parent interaction), many times acting as a “first impression” for the judge.
